Hiii, May I Help You?
After a quick stop in St. Louis to see the Gateway Arch, we arrived in Kansas City! I have some family that were gracious enough to be our hosts for the evening. The usual place of stay is the White House(their last name is White) in Shawnee Mission, about 20 minutes outside of KC. We missed you Aunt Laurie!
However, because of our quick stop and planned events, it was more convenient to stay with my cousin Taylor. She has an awesome place right near the beautiful KC plaza! Planned events you ask? Well, KC has some of the best BBQ in the world, so that was a must do. Uncle Phil didn’t disagree and picked one of themost well known KC barbeque places. Gates BBQ on Main St.
If you’re going to do KC BBQ, you need to do it right.
– Uncle Phil
He wasn’t kidding.

Right where we stood to order was also a waterfall coming from the ceiling. This is when we knew it was KC BBQ heaven and we were in for a treat.
His only advice: Just be ready to order. (okay Phil, whatever…who knows exactly what they want when the go out to eat?). We should have listened but also glad we didn’t for the experience. As soon as you walk in, the well known phrase “Hi, may I help you? is asked, spoken, and then when you aren’t ordering, shouted at you multiple times. Laura was fortunate to capture it on the motion picture:
We both dove into the burnt end sandwiches, side of fries for the lady. This was the greasiest, most delicious can’t-stop-eating BBQ sandwich. (No, Laura didn’t finish it, com’n now.) But we were very satisfied – it was everything we needed out of some KC BBQ.
Nightlife
After stuffing our faces, Taylor took us to O’Dowds, a popular KC hot spot in the plaza. Live music for the 3rd night in a row! Downstairs was were Patrick Lentz performed and got the dance floor packed. We avoided it once again. 🙂 O’Dowds (commonly called O’doods) also has an outdoor patio upstairs. We hung as long as we could before calling it a night. The long drives and late nights got to us. Taylor was a rockstar host and we couldn’t be more grateful for letting us stay at her place.
Okay, okay, so Taylor also has a rockstar dog in Maddox and we are grateful to him too. No, really, an actual rockstar.
Thank you to everyone who made our KC experience a blast!

PS: we made it all the way to KC without paying for gas! Pretty sweet. Thanks to all the family and friends for their generosity with gas cards! And KC gas was remarkably cheap.. $3.11/gallon! Laura was amazed that she could fill her gas tank for less than $50! First time in years!
